Element A

Introduction

For Element A the goal is to develop a real world problem and justify the problem with reliable information. A survey has to be created to see if the problem is worth researching and finding a solution for. As well as finding experts in the field, to get a better understanding and intel on how the problem can affect a large community.

Pictures of the Problem
Bad Bedding designs with horrible sleeping environments can cause the body to overheat while sleeping. When the body temperature is too high while sleeping the chances of waking up from REM sleep and tossing and turning increase. This impacts both the amount of sleep humans get and the quality of sleep they get each night. Which comes with many downsides such as decreased focus, impaired productivity, and an agitated mood.[9]
The graph shows the percent of REM sleep that occurs in different temperature ranges.[6]

Survey & Evaluations

52.9% of people do have problems with the temperature in their room. Most of the answers came from the people who like sleeping in colder temperatures. 47.1% do not have any problems with their room and like their unregulated temperature[11].
54.9% wake up irritated after experiencing extreme temperatures in their room. This can be from either extreme coldness or the most common response, extreme heat. 45.1% wake up without a problem and do not struggle with extreme temperatures[11].

Conclusion

After wording 12 different problem statements, sending out a survey, studying articles, and interviewing mentors it has been indicated that the problem is a real and current problem.  People from 14-35 are having trouble with hot temperatures affecting their REM sleep.[2] The information received from the survey showed that close to half of the interviews surveyed, cannot regulate the temperature of their rooms. Of those who cannot regulate their room temperature, “92.2% said that they prefer to sleep in a colder room  around 62℉ - 74℉.”[11] Given all of the research and data , the problem is justified and can be validated.
